I had a wonderful day yesterday. This week, I had Sunday and Monday off. I spent Sunday being very responsible, cleaning my house and getting the laundry done. This left me with all of Monday free to just enjoy myself however I saw fit.
"As I see fit," of course, includes as much reading as possible.
So after being productive online (haha, like that's even possible! Oh wait, I DID update this blog, so that's something), I loaded up by bag with books, hopped on a bus, got up to Fremont and got off to explore. I got (an overpriced) lunch at a little sandwich shop and explored the local used bookstore. One thing I love about Seattle is that every neighborhood seems to have at least one good bookstore. Very cool. Unfortunately, this one didn't have what I'm currently searching for (The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, or anything by Saul Alinsky), so I headed out for my final destination: Fremont Coffee, recommended by a friend, and very, very cool.
The coffee shop is in what appears to have been a house at one time. Basically, it looks like they just took down all the doors, left the walls standing, and filled it up with chairs and tables. After ordering my Italian soda and a chocolate chip cookie, I wandered from one small room to the next, deciding where I wanted to sit. I ended up spending about 3 hours there, reading to my heart's content. And afterwards, it was still a nice, warm enough day for me to order some ice cream and sit outside to eat it in the sun! Yay!
What I can't figure out is how to navigate which book I'll read next. I always have this huge pull between fiction and non-fiction. Now, I'm also trying to fit in something in Spanish to keep my skills sharp (though I think jumping from J.K. Rowling straight to Che Guevara might have been a little much). There are so many things I have to read! I'm on the last few pages of Sister Outsider, an amazing collection of essays and speeches by Audre Lorde, a Black, lesbian, socialist feminist who died in '93. (Seriously, amazing. Read it. It is super, super important.) Next, I have to read God of the Oppressed by James H. Cone (black liberation theology!!!..... ! .... !!), because it is on rent from the public library. But after that, I have about 35 tantalizing choices.
Eek! How do you go about deciding what you'll read next?
